Since July 1st 2016, every packed container to be loaded on board of a SOLAS ship needs to have its Verified Gross Mass determined. Determining the weight can be done through Method 1 (weighing the packed container using calibrated and certified weighing equipment) or through Method 2 (calculation: container tare weight + weight of the goods; which requires a special permission).
The shipper provides this information to the shipping agent, who passes it on to the carrier (who needs to balance the vessel), and to the terminal (who is not allowed to load the container without the information). Several other parties could also benefit from having the weight in their digital files, e.g. CMR documents.
By using our VGM API, the last known verified weight and additional measurement information for these export containers can now be accessed through a central datasource. This reduces the need for companies to share this data through the traditional means of communication (phone, email, pdf). The live version of the API allows you to look up the "Method 1" VGM of a container from the moment it is available. In a next phase, the API will also support VGM's obtained through Method 2.
Be compliant with laws & regulations and always provide accurate weight information.
Single truth for the VGM (Verified Gross Mass) of a container.
Knowing the weight of a container helps organising the supply chain.
This Data API is an access-controlled API. This means that the application user, i.e. the data user, needs to be identified in order to receive data from the API, and that he will only receive the information that is shared with the organisation that he is part of.
To be able to use an access-controlled API:
When the set-up is complete, the application user logs in to the application with his NxtPort account. The application calls the NxtPort API on behalf of that account.
Steps to take:
5 calls / minute
€ 0,05 per container
Subscribe to this plan to make use of the API in the live environment.
For development and testing, there is a free sandbox plan in the market.
* A monthly NxtPort subscription fee of €35 is invoiced, regardless of the number of API's you are subscribed to.

Any party that determines containers weights can provide this data to the NxtPort platform and share it with others in the supply chain. The API currently supports only actual weighings, but calculated weights will soon be implemented. NxtPort is also developing an API that provides container tarra weights, as useful piece of information for those applying the calculation method. Feel free to contact us for further information.
To start sharing your data, contact NxtPort. We will make it easy for you to get your data on the platform and start sharing it through the API. You stay at all times in control of which parties can access your data, and we provide a full audit trail of who has consulted which of your data.
This API is an access-controlled API. This means that your application needs to accommodate an OAuth2 authentication flow between the application user and the NxtPort platform.
The application user logs in to the NxtPort identity component, and your application requests access to the API on behalf of the application user. The NxtPort platform then returns an access token to your application, which can be used to call the API.
To be able to request an access token, your application needs to be registered in the NxtPort platform. Registering an application is currently a manual process, so please contact NxtPort for this. Go to our support desk where you will find all required information on how to get started.
